
On December 13th, I received an email from PayPal that I had a "shopping notification for JD Sports". I have never bought anything from JD Sports. The email looked like spam, but checking the headers showed that it was sent by PayPal. I ignored it but receved a "reminder" on the 15th and decided to investigate. In the past, I have had good success with PayPal customer service and wanted to raise my concerns directly with PayPal.. I called them and was told these notifications were part of a PayPal "Christmas promotion".
I had already reviewed PayPal's Settings / Notifications and did not find a way to block these notifications. The PayPal representative offered to send me an email with detailed instructions that covered what I had already explored. I found several PayPal Community posts relating to these unwanted notifications, one of which pointed me to Settings / Data & Privacy. Clicking on PayPal Shopping led me to the following screen. Time will tell whether this successfully disables future unsolicited commercial messages.
